The Bultaco Sherpa T Model 125 sits within one of the most important motorcycle families in observed trials history. By 1974, the Sherpa T had already established itself as the machine that changed the sport, helping move trials away from heavy British four-strokes and toward lightweight, purpose-built Spanish two-strokes. The original Sherpa T had grown out of Bultaco’s work with Sammy Miller in the mid-1960s, and from that point on it became the benchmark that rival makers were forced to chase.
The Model 125 was introduced in 1974 as the successor to the Model 92 350. Period Sherpa histories describe the 124 and 125 series as an important further development of the line, incorporating substantial changes aimed at reducing weight and refining performance. Among the improvements noted for the 1974 models were a chrome-molybdenum chassis, dural hubs and sprocket carrier, and new wheels. These updates show how Bultaco kept evolving the Sherpa T in small but meaningful ways to stay at the front of trials competition.
Like the earlier Model 92, the Model 125 was one of Bultaco’s larger-capacity Sherpas. In Bultaco fashion, the model number did not directly match the exact engine size, and the bike was sold as part of the firm’s “350” class offering. What riders valued in these larger Sherpas was not outright speed, but the stronger low-end pull and tractability they offered in sections, giving experienced riders a little more authority at very low revs without losing the balance and feel the Sherpa was famous for.
Today, the Sherpa T125 is remembered as part of the mature classic era of Sherpa development: a point where Bultaco had already revolutionised trials and was refining the formula rather than inventing it. That makes the Model 125 significant not just as a 1974 trials motorcycle, but as one of the later key steps in the evolution of the bike that defined modern observed trials.
